Stop-Loss

I have mixed feelings about this movie. I don't know what Mr. Phillipe saw in the girl in this movie to cheat on his wife and date this woman. Witherspoon is more attractive... Texans aren't hicks, but these people seemed like hicks. Drinking all the time and shooting things for fun... SO MUCH FUN... It blended the damaging mental effects a lot of soldiers have when they get home into real-life senarios, which was done very well. The real reaction of finding out that you aren't done serving your country, but going back to the place that has already messed you up is actually happening. I don't agree with war. The Americans should just let the Iraqi's kill themselves all out so that the problem fixes itself. Who are we to decide to that they need democracy??? This unnecessary war looks like neocolonization to me. What this movie also showed was that weak people should not be allowed to enlist. These are people who come home and don't know how to look after themselves when they get back. There is more to life than fighting someone else's battles. I'm still not sure how I feel about this one yet.

It's a Boy Girl Thing

A bit on the cheese side... what I don't get is why the music is so old for this moive. "Shake ya ass"??? That was forever ago. Does it cost too much money for brand new songs??? Back to the point, it was exactly what I needed. I went to the movie store looking for "December Boys", and it wasn't on the shelf so I ended up finding this, which I thought would have been in theatres. It was so funny. The same cliches of jocks and preppy smart girls, but they do exist in some form or another. Maybe it was the chemistry, but it just made me want to fall in love with someone slowly. The two characters are neighbours that hate each other (well... maybe not so much, but they pretend to anyways... because you can see the sexual tension right from the beginning) and ended up switching bodies and realizing what the other person's life is like. Seeing another perspective of qualities that people admire about the body they are in, just shows that there is more to a person than how they look. Anyone who doesn't know this, is missing out on life and meeting some truely wonderful people. It was a lovely, cute romantic comedy that I was secretly craving.

Never Back Down

When I saw the preview for this I thought it looked pretty lame. I was actually surprised though, that the preview was way off on the movie which just looked like some UFC style fighting and two guys who were competing with each other. It was more like a confused and angry teenager moves to Orlando from Iowa after his little brother wins a tennis scholarship. With the family on the rocks because of the death of the father who's death is somewhat mentioned and not explained until later for a fresh new start at returning to a more functional family. Guy meets girl, girl lures boy into trouble even though she has interest in him and then the lead character ends up training how to fight to kick the ass of the guy who demolished and embarassed him, but then to gain and show strength and overcoming life's challenges and excepting responsibility and realising when you're not to be blamed for life's mishaps. The lead character looked and somewhat sounded like a taller, better looking Tom Cruise. I was completely distracted by his good looks and body. I was disappointed that Dijmon Hounsou was the martial-boxing style mentor. He has done so many great films and such an amazing actor, I felt this was beneath him. The role made him look type-casted because he's just so damn muscular and good looking. I enjoyed the mousy and geeky friend and the endowed blonde looked like any other pretty face with a nice body, which seems to be cropping up lately with unknown stars in movies. It was better than I expected and it wasn't completely void of a realistic plot or dialogue.

Step Brothers

It was hilarious. It had a bit too much of the word "fuck" in it... okay way too of the word was used. I don't know many parents who say this to their kids. Its about two men who are 39 and 40 and still live at home with their parents. Ferrel's mom marries Reilly's dad and the 4 of them live together. This is exactly what would happen between 2 boys and then made it between twoo grown up men. I'm not sure what part of this movie seemed realistic, but from my own personal experience, I have yet to see the younger sibling be overbearing and cruel to the older sibling. Usually the older sibling beats the shit out of the younger one for whatever and then the younger one cries to their mom or dad to get their way. Not all kids cry to their mommies and daddies when they get hurt by their siblings. Those kids are spoiled babies who get whatever they want from their parents and its sickens me. I didn't need to see Ferrel's balls or "nut pouch" tea-bagging a drum set, but I guess they thought it was funny. Some of the movie was just gross or stupid. These two comedians are not bending their characters much, because they seem to keep playing the same person in different movies. Probably the three best parts are Ferrel almost crying at the dinner table, Ferrel singing at the "Catalina Wine Mixer" and the fight scene at the end. I would love to punch people while on the merry-go-round!

I liked this. It wasn't really good. What annoyed me was the filming of it. Was it low budget? It had the Miami Vice night filming that looked cheap because the whole film didn't have that same structure. They also used electronic panning which was either the 80's or 90's when every movie used this technique, and it looked bad then and it looked bad in this movie. Is it too much work to pay the camera technichian to pan the camera himself? It just seems natural and right.

This movie reminded me of how I have to work for everything I get in life and there is always some kink, some sacrifice you have to make that you don't want to when it comes to money but you have to. Like all movies its got its happy ending.

What's with Kevin Spacey doing all these douche characters in movies? Has he been all washed up and he's taking what his agent can get him? Where has his movie career gone? I think everyone forgets about his Usual Suspects movie which was phenom.

A bit of youth freedom from the college life where money, girls and the finer things become a new part of your life which let's just say we would all want to take advantage of even for just one weekend if we could. It also had themes running with the betrayal of friends, romance, determination and honesty. All this just for tuition. Mine is more like 7000$ a year and I still gotta work my ass off working 2 jobs to make that kind of money. I think I would have done the same thing. I would have been less greedy though. If it seems too good to be true, then it really is.

Mamma Mia!

SOOOOOO good!!! Before it came out on Friday, I was calling it the Hairspray for this summer. I loved Hairspray, but this, this was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better. I had read a review of the film in The Globe and Mail, which made me a bit wary of watching it. Basically the critic watched the film and then complained about how the first 15 minutes were exhausting to watch- which I did not feel at all- and how they over use the ariel view of the Greek islands, but I really didn't notice that one either except for one very short part of the film. If that's all they could pick on then, they really had to dig.

Like all musicals, some of it was cheesy. I don't want to spoil part of the plot, but the gay thing seemed innappropriate in my opinion. I have nothing against homosexuality, but this just seemed out of place which made the ending seem like a joke which was unnecessary. I liked that the writer of the musical wrote the screenplay also, keeping true to what she thought should and shouldn't have been in there and added a few things to give it that movie magic. This movie looked like it was a lot of fun to make and you could tell the cast enjoyed it which made the movie even better because there was the heart put in it all the way through. Meryl Streep was just wonderful in the film. I loved loved loved it and it was probably one of my favourite films so far this summer. Musicals aren't for everyone, but this production was great. The Greek staff always singing back-up and popping up everywhere just cracked me up everytime, especially the women.

Shutter

For all the Japanese remakes they are doing, this is one of the better ones. I've seen all of them except for the Grudge 2 because the first Grudge was terrible. As far as Japanese horror remakes go, The Ring will probably be one of the scariest movies I've seen. Back to Shutter, I liked this one. Yes I was annoyed by the whole going to Japan. I'm sure it could have been staged in North America, but whatever. Somewhat predictable, I guessed the ending at the beginning, but it still had its moments for me. I like being scared, but not so much that I have nightmares and can't recover. The lead actress wasn't that bad. I haven't seen her in anything before this. It would bee nice to see her in something else in the future. Maybe a rom-com. Best scene ever is the studio flash scene. I screamed. I've decided that any horror movies I waltch by myself will be during the day, that way I'm less scared then if I were watching when it's dark. I still have the I can't have my feet on the floor in case someone pulls me under kind of feeling. This is why waiting for scary movies on DVD is so much better, you can avoid that feeling. I'm not going to go through the plot, because most likely you will guess the ending too if you're like me. Either way, its one of the better horror movies that doesn't consist of complete gore for scare factor.
